Beautiful aromas of crushed blackberry and dried flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Solid and concentrated, yet balanced. Chewy. Needs bottle age. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera.

The 2006 I Sodi di San Niccolo is fabulous. Beautifully delineated aromatics meld into a breathtaking array of dark fruit, crushed rocks, smoke, tar, minerals and flowers in this totally thrilling Tuscan red. The fruit completely saturates the palate, while persistent notes of crushed rocks and all things mineral round things out. I love the way Malvasia Nera confers darkness, richness and power to the Sangioveto, but without abandoning a pure-bred Tuscan expression of sheer class. I Sodi has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle and I have no doubt that will be the case here. I Sodi is 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera aged in French oak, of which approximately 50% is new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. 95+ —Antonio Galloni

Good full ruby-red. Rich, deep aromas of ripe red cherry, sweet almond and tobacco, with subtle floral and mineral nuances building with aeration. Then fruity, tactile and very intense, with a floral element lifting the superripe red cherry, tobacco and delicate underbrush flavors. Finishes magically mouthcoating and smooth, with terrific juicy persistence. Even though I know every vintage of this wine well, I was amazed at how good this young wine was; in fact, this vintage may well be one of the three best ever. —Ian D'Agata
