Aurel 2005Like all the reds at Domaine Les Aurelles, Aurel was vinified and matured in Vats made of enamelled steel. A blend of 65% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 15% Grenache that in its youth was slightly awkward, so Basile decided to release the 2006 before the 2005. We find it very attractive, concentrated , velvety red with fleshy, spicy, mineral and ripe dark fruits all to the fore.
Parker says 'Bay laurel, fennel, ripe plum, black cherry, black tea, and brine in the nose of the 2005 Coteaux du Languedoc Aurel – along with a hint of reductive pungency – usher in a firmly but finely tannic, plum-fruited palate, tinged with black pepper, tobacco, and herbs.' Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
There is a slight toughness to the tannins at present and I wonder whether these might still resolve. This vintage incorporated a high 62% of Mourvedre.
